FAMILY MATTERS

( The Purpose of the Family - June 21, 2020)

Series Big Idea: "The purpose of the family"

Sermon Big Idea: "God has ordained the family as the building block of society"

Key Scripture (Ephesians 6:1-4)

God has ordained the family as the building block of society. He intended for the family to give spiritual and social stability to its members. The family was given the responsibility of training and encouraging their children.

Ephesians 6:1–4 (HCSB): Children, obey  your parents as you would the Lord,  because this is right. 2 Honor your father and mother, which is the first commandment  with a promise, 3 so that it may go well with you and that you may have a long life in the land. 4 Fathers, don’t stir up anger  in your children, but bring them up in the training  and instruction of the Lord.

Not only has God ordained the family but He instituted marriage to be the basis for the family

Matthew 19:3–9 (HCSB): Some Pharisees approached Him to test Him. They asked, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife on any grounds?” 4 “Haven’t you read,” He replied, “that He who created  them in the beginning made them male and female,”   5 and He also said: “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two will become one flesh? 6 So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, man must not separate.” 7 “Why then,” they asked Him, “did Moses command us to give divorce papers  and to send her away?” 8 He told them, “Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because of the hardness of your hearts. But it was not like that from the beginning. 9 And I tell you, whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery.”

Jesus is not and should not just be a part of the family but He is the only person that can hold it together.

Colossians 1:15–17 (HCSB): He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For everything was created by Him, in heaven and on earth, the visible and the invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities— all things have been created through Him and for Him. 17 He is before all things, and by Him all things  hold together.

Conclusion:

Church, the family is intended to be the primary influence in the raising of the children and also for the decisions for their future. The problem in our modern world and society is not individual sins. These sins are the byproduct of a society that has penalized the family in every way shape and form by insisting that everyone go his or her own way. But history attests that this is cause for destruction of entire societies. We need Christ.
